Hurdles

Got over two hurdles this week.  One...finally clicking the "cancel account" button on Daily Mile.  Two...committing to my first swim coach session.

Daily Mile is an awesome way to connect with other athletes and for me, it became sort of an accountability measure.  I knew I would be more apt to do a work out if I had to post it for others to see and comment about.  It was great for a while, but then it became a vice.  I also began to feel obligated to log on and comment on friend's workouts daily.  I have a huge goal coming up in May (that's for another blog), and really need to focus on my work outs, my speed, and my time.  The last straw came when I was really sick this last weekend.  I had gone to the doctor and was diagnosed with strep.  I could not use enough common sense to take care of me.  I thought for a second, "If I don't work out then I'll have nothing to post!"  Are you kidding me?  The next day I walked into the study and was elated when I clicked the "cancel account" button.  I will miss the people I met along the way, but not the monotony of it or the extra chore it created.  I will be more focused on my own efforts and not embarrassed about my speed or lack thereof.  Ahhh...internal relief!

And the other hurdle...I'm pretty much slow at everything, but swimming is really tough for me.  I don't need to be faster, but I'd really like to be more efficient so I exert less effort over longer periods of time.  So I'm blessed to be swimming with a coach who is picking me apart one swim at a time.  Today we just worked on my stroke.  I'm glad I got a 1200y warm up in before she showed up.  I wasn't ready for the 1200y drill she gave me to work on my stroke alone.  So much concentration went into this drill that it exhausted me.  She has me saying, "I am a shark, I am a shark, I am a shark."  She's amazing, patient, and silly all at the same time.  I think she will be good for me.
